NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Purdue utilized an RBI single in the sixth inning and tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to down the University of Notre Dame softball team 4-1 on Wednesday at Melissa Cook Stadium. The contest marked the fifth and final game of Notre Dame’s season-opening homestand.
How It Happened
Notre Dame (21-11) worked out of a bases-loaded jam on defense in the top of the first inning against Purdue (8-24). Alexis Holloway (13-7) struck out a Boilermaker hitter on a 1-2 pitch to leave the bases juiced.
An Irish fielding error and infield single with two outs, one of six two-out hits for Purdue on the day, put the Boilermakers ahead 1-0 in the top of the second. Purdue held the lead until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Morgan Reed hit a solo home run to right center field to lead off the frame. Reed’s fifth home run of the season tied the game at 1-1.
Purdue re-took the lead in the top of the sixth with a double down the line at third base and a sharp single up the middle, vaulting in front 2-1. The Boilermakers added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning, again with two outs, on a bases-clearing double to right center for the final margin of victory at 4-1.
