COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of Notre Dame fencing team opened the season with sweeps from the men’s and women’s team at the Western Invitational on Saturday from the Air Force Academy. Both squads went 7-0 on the day and defeated Stanford, North Carolina, Incarnate Word, UC San Diego, NJIT, Air Force and Brandeis.
Both the men’s and women’s team did not allow more than nine points in any of their matches on the day. In four of the seven of the women’s matches, they allowed five points or less. The foil squads led the way for both teams on Saturday as men’s foil went 57-6 and the women composed a 58-5 mark.
Andrew Machovec led the men’s team with 19 wins on the day and posted a 3-0 mark in five of his nine matches. Nick Itkin went a perfect 15-0 on the day while six other Irish got to double-figure wins (Marcello Olivares, 14-2; Alexandre Lacaze, 14-4; Malcolm Fields 12-3; Stephen Ewart, 13-8 and Harrison Kimatian, 10-4). Lacaze and Will Attig (5-1) both made their first career appearances for the Irish over the weekend.
On the women’s side, Kaylin Hsieh led the way with a 18-2 record for the day. Nicole Pustilnik (14-0) and Daria Kudriavtseva (12-0) both were perfect throughout the tournament while Miriam Grady (15-4), Karina Yaroshenko (16-1), Amita Berthier (13-1), Neve Harrison (12-6) and Amanda Pirkowski (11-5) all got to double-digit wins. Pustilnik and Yaroshenko were joined by Cate Priestly (9-3) and Jadeyn Williams (9-3) for their first collegiate appearances on Saturday.

The Irish will be back on the strip Sunday, November 21, when they travel up to Patten Gymnasium in Evanston for the Northwestern Invitational. It will be their second of three meets prior to the winter semester break.
