The Notre Dame Women’s Tennis team moved to 1-0 on Saturday, defeating Iowa 6-1 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in the season opener.
The Irish stormed to take the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Carrie Beckman and Page Freeman got things off to a hot start with a 6-1 victory at the top spot, followed by a 6-4 victory at No. 2 by the senior duo of Julia Andreach and Yashna Yellayi.
The momentum continued for Notre Dame heading into singles. Sophomore Akari Matsuno was first off the court with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory at the No. 5 position. Fellow sophomore Bojana Pozder made quick work of her Hawkeye opponent at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory to extend the Irish lead to 3-0. Junior Nibi Ghosh clinched the match, securing a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6. Andreach and Freeman each put exclamation marks on the dominant team performance, locking in wins at the No. 2 and No. 1 positions, respectively.
