MELBOURNE, Fl. – This past weekend, the Notre Dame Women’s Golf team competed in their first team event of the Spring 2023 season. The Columbia Classic presented by Moon Golf hosted 14 teams at Duran Golf Club; a course with rolling terrain accompanied with undulating greens, lakes, native grasslands, and whipping winds from the Atlantic Ocean. The Irish finished in fifth place with rounds of 295 (+7) and 294 (+6) = 589(+13) – 1 stroke out of Penn State’s 4th place finish, and 9 strokes ahead of Old Dominion.
“It was a very solid first tournament of our spring season and I am happy with how our team competed in the windy conditions. Chloe and Montgomery were so steady and were really locked in all weekend. As a team, we have a few things to continue to work on, but each player continues to get better and we are proud of the progress that we are making,” said Head Coach Caroline Ellis.
The first day of the tournament featured the Irish tied for fourth place. Despite the windy conditions throughout the day Chloe Schiavone and Montgomery Ferreira led the team with even par rounds (72). Lauren Beaudreau wasn’t far behind as she finished the first round with a (74); Madelyn Jones (77); Caroline Curtis (80); and Caroline Wrigley (83).
Round 2 of the Columbia Classic was canceled due to high winds at 27 mph and gusts up to 39 mph. The event proceeded to turn into a 36 hole tournament post cancellation of day two.
Day three of the event, the Irish held strong. Ferreira and Schiavone again finished with even par rounds (72) to land them T6th with totals of [144]. Beaudreau finished T29 after shooting (74-76) for a total of [150]. Jones finished the tournament shooting (77,76) for a combined [153]; while teammate Wrigley was right behind her shooting (83-74) for a finish of [157]. Curtis competed as an individual and finished with (80-81) and a total [161] on the weekend. As a team, the Irish maintained a top five finish.
The Notre Dame Women’s Golf team will compete next in Mesa, Arizona where they will host the 2023 Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club – March 10th-12th, 2023.
