DURHAM, N.C. – The Notre Dame fencing team traveled to Durahm, North Carolina for the 2022 ACC Fencing Championships.
On the first day of individual competition the Irish collected 10 medals across the men’s and women’s squads.
On the men’s squad, Jared Smith went up against teammate Malcolm Fields in the sabre championship. In a 15-7 match, Smith came out with the win to secure first place and Fields took second place. Andrew Machovec went up against the eventual silver medalist when Machovec won in a 15-14 battle. He took first place for his second ACC men’s foil title. Hunter Candreva and Stephen Ewart each rounded out the medal count for the men’s squad when they took silver and bronze in epee.
The women’s squad took all three gold medals in epee, sabre, and foil. Amanda Pirkowski took home gold after a 15-11 matchup. Karina Yaroshenko and Rebeca Candescu went up against each other, with Yaroshenko and Candescu taking gold and silver medals in foil. In women’s sabre, Notre Dame teammates went up against each other again to capture gold and silver medals for Daria Kudriavtseva and Atara Greenbaum.
