NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame men’s tennis team put another strong day in the books Saturday with a pair of singles players and a doubles tandem remaining in play at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Eck Tennis Pavilion heading into Sunday’s quarterfinals in both draws.
Top-seeded Quentin Monaghan breezed through his two matches Saturday, downing Illinois’ Toshiba Matsuya 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 32, and upending 12th-seeded Leopold Gomez Islinger of Wisconsin-Green Bay, 6-3, 6-2, in the Round of 16. Monaghan will be joined in the quarterfinals by junior Eddy Covalschi, who battled for a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(5) victory over Wisconsin’s Josef Dodridge in the Round of 32, then went on to defeat Illinois’ Julian Childers 6-3, 6-4 to improve to 7-2 in singles matches on the fall.
In doubles play, second-seeded and 28th-ranked Monaghan and Alex Lawson scored a pair of wins to move into the quarterfinals of that draw. The pair defeated Garrett Gardner and Lucas Waak of Valparaiso 8-4 in the Round of 32, then downed Wisconsin’s Alexander Kokorev and Darius Mackenzie 8-3.
Seniors Nicolas Montoya and Eric Schnurrenberger picked up an 8-6 victory over Illinois State’s Christoffer Greve and Dylan Steffens, but fell to seventh-seeded Runhao Hua and Alex Knight of Michigan 8-3 in the Round of 16.
Play will resume Sunday with two rounds of singles and two rounds of doubles. Championship matches in each draw will take place Monday.
