SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame fencing team hosted the first of two days of the DeCicco Duals on campus on Saturday and the Irish were flawless on the day. The women’s team turned in a perfect record of 8-0 in the opening day while the men followed with a perfect mark of 7-0.
The Fighting Irish women’s team won the premier matchup of the weekend, defeating No. 5 Northwestern by a score of 15-12 in a showdown of top-five teams. Notre Dame won the foil and sabre portions of the dual by scores of 6-3 each to carry the hosts to the victory and remain undefeated on the season.
Kaitlyn Hulseburg and Ariadna Tucker had monster days on the women’s side. Hulseburg went undefeated, turning in an incredible mark of 21-0 in sabre, while Tucker posted a record of 20-1 in foil for the Irish, including a perfect 3-0 record against No. 5 Northwestern in the biggest matchup of the weekend. Hulseburg’s sabre teammate Maria Mozhaeva also had a notable performance, going 16-0 in the first day of competition.
On the men’s side James Sennewald was the headliner on the day, finishing 14-0 in epee. Liam Bas was just behind Sennewald in the win column, tallying a mark of 12-0 in foil in the opening day of the DeCicco Duals. All seven of the Fighting Irish men’s wins were in blowout fashion, as the closest score on the day was an 18-9 victory over Georgia Tech in the opening matchup of the competition.
The Irish are back in action on Sunday as they wrap up the DeCicco Duals. Notre Dame’s first action of day two will start at 9 a.m. ET in the North Dome of the Joyce Center. Admission is free.
