Pittsburgh, Pa. – The Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team opened the 2009 season on Saturday afternoon and rolled to a 22-7 win over the Duquesne Dukes at Rooney Field.
Junior attack standout Gina Scioscia (Summit, N.J.) led the Irish attack with seven points, scoring four goals and adding three assists. Sophomore midfielder Shaylyn Blaney (Stony Brook, N.Y.) also had four goals in the victory.
In all, 11 Notre Dame players made the scoresheet. Joining Blaney with four points was sophomore Ansley Stewart (Alexandria, Va.) who had three goals and one assist for a four-point afternoon in her first collegiate start. Her goal 9:50 into the first half was the first goal of her collegiate career.
Jillian Byers (Sr., Northport, N.Y.) added three goals as did sophomore Kailene Abt (Huntington, N.Y.). Freshman Maggie Tamasitis (Fr., Boyertown, Pa.) had her first collegiate goal and three points on the afternoon. Also recording multi-point games were Jackie Doherty (So., Ellicott City, Md.), Kaitlin Keena (So., Vienna, Va.) and Shannon Burke (Sr., Timonium, Md.) as each had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Meredith Locasto (Pittsburgh, Pa.) rounded out the scoring with her first career goal late in the second half.
Meghan Frederick led the Dukes in scoring with three goals and an assist. Katie Rekart, Shannon Hadaway, Sarah Carson and Ashley Wood added single goals for the home team.
The win gives Notre Dame a 1-0 record while Duquesne fell to 0-1 with the loss. The Irish return to action on Friday, Feb. 20 when they play host to top-ranked Northwestern in a 7:00 p.m. game at the Loftus Center.
Notre Dame scored the opening goal of the game just 1:51 into the contest as Blaney scored on a free-position shot. Doherty and Abt followed to make it 3-0 just 5:43 into the opening stanza.
Hadaway broke that streak with her first goal of the season at 22:50 only to see the Irish roll off five straight goals to make it 8-1 with 12:34 left in the first half.
Following a free-position goal by Duquesne’s Carson (9:58 left in first) Notre Dame ran off four more goals to make it 12-2 with 5:55 left in the first half.
Goals by Frederick and Wood cut the lead to 14-4 before Byers (first goal of the season) and Scioscia closed out the scoring in the first half with the Irish leading 14-5.
In the second half, Notre Dame ran off the first seven goals of the stanza with Scioscia and Stewart scoring twice and Blaney, Abt and Locasto getting one goal for a 21-5 lead. Frederick and Rekart scored the final two Duquesne goals while Byers closed out the Notre Dame onslaught with her third goal of the day for the final score of 22-7.
The Irish set a program record with 49 shots on goal in the game, getting 24 in the first half and 25 in the second. The Dukes had just 18 in the contest.
Senior goalkeeper Erin Goodman (Cortlandt Park, N.Y.) played 47 minutes, giving up three goals while making five saves. Junior Amy Winik (Freehold, N.J.) saw 13 minutes of action, surrendering four goals with two saves on the afternoon.
Caitlin Carducci and Sara Beckstead each played 30 minutes in the Duquesne goal. Carducci gave up 14 goals in the first half, making five saves. Beckstead gave up eight goals in the final 30 minutes while making 10 saves.
