GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of Notre Dame women golf team stands seventh entering Saturday’s (April 19) final day of competition at the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golf Championship being held at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Ranked 54th, the Irish own a 609 two-day total after shooting a 19-over-par 303 on Friday, three shots better than their 306 first-round score on Thursday.
Notre Dame began Friday’s second round in a three-way tie with No. 25 Florida State and No. 84 Maryland.
“Today was another tough day on a tough golf course,” said head coach Susan Holt. “I thought we played pretty well. We made some improvements but still need to clean things up on and around the greens. We are in a position to have a top 5 finish and are looking forward to playing well tomorrow. Talia is playing really steady and has posted two solid rounds so far.”
Sophomore Talia Campbell (Dallas, Texas) is in a three-way tie for 11th on the leaderboard as she remained Notre Dame’s to golfer. Campbell had two birdies on the day on both the par-four fourth and 13th holes and pared 12 holes for a two-over par 73. She has a two-day total of 148 (+6) following yesterday’s 75.
Freshman Jordan Ferreira (University Place, Wash.) shot a four-over-par 75 and owns 151 two-round total. Ferreira’s lone birdie on the day occurred on the par-five fifth hole as she also finished with 12 pars on the day. She is tied for 22nd heading into tomorrow’s final round.
Junior Ashley Armstrong (Flossmoor, Ill.) registered a six-over par 77 and is 13-over for the two rounds with a 155 total. She finished with a birdie on the three-par 12th hole and also had 11 pars on the day. Armstrong is tied for 33rd heading into tomorrow’s third round. Also with a 155 total is junior Kelli Oride (Lihue, Hawaii) as she posted a seven-over-par 78 with 12 pars on the day.
Senior Kristina Nhim (Cypress, Calif.) is tied for 42nd with a 159 two-round score after finishing with an eight-over par 79 for the second straight day. Nhim birdied two holes on the day — the four-par eighth hold and three-par 16th hold.
Duke, ranked third in the country, started the day in a tie for first place with Virginia, but the Blue Devils distanced themselves from the 11-team field with a one-over par 285 for a two-round 576 total (+8). Virginia, which began the in a first-place tie with Duke, fell to second with a 15-over par 299, and have a seven stroke lead with a 590 total over No. 21 North Carolina. The Tar Heels moved up to third on the leaderboard after finishing with a +14 299. They are are 29-over-par with a 597 total after two rounds.
No. 26 Miami fell one spot to fourth place after a 301 (+17) as the Hurricanes are 31-over-par with a 599 total. No. 27 North Carolina State made the biggest jump of the day as the Wolfpack shot a 292, eight-over-par. It was the second lowest score on the day as North Carolina is fifth with a 600 total.
No, 25 Florida State is just four strokes in front of Notre Dame with a two-round 605 total. The Seminoles registered a 15-over-par round 299.
Maryland and Clemson are tied for eighth at +43 (611), while Wake Forest is 10th at 617 and Boston College is 11th with a two-round total of 644.
