NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Following a successful first season at the helm, head coach Link Jarrett is pleased to announce the incoming baseball class for the 2021 season. A mix of graduate transfers, junior college transfers and incoming freshman highlight the 17 new faces that will be joining the Irish this year.
“Our coaching staff is excited about our incoming group of players,” said Link Jarrett. “We feel we have a variety of quality individuals, talented in their own unique skill sets. The addition of the transfers adds instant experience and maturity to our roster. We are also impressed by our talented freshmen and how they are adapting to a new environment. Rich and Chuck did a great job in our recruiting transition. Equally as impressive is how these newcomers represent all that is distinct and special about Notre Dame.”
The incoming class is filled with a strong group of graduate transfers who have played a number of collegiate games and look to make an immediate impact with the Irish. The Irish bring in three Friday starters along with two key bullpen pieces to shape their rotation heading into the 2021 season. The five graduate transfers have played a combined 279 collegiate games, including 217 starts prior to coming to Notre Dame. The incoming freshmen are also a strong group of immediate impact players that will round the Irish into form for the upcoming 2021 season.
Some of the newcomers expected to make an immediate impact include RHP Christian Scafidi from The University of Pennsylvania who was the 2019 Ivy League Pitcher of the Year and earned a spot on the first team All-Ivy in his last full season of baseball. C/OF Alex Brait from FGCU was named to the A-Sun All-Freshman team in 2017 and earned first team (2018) and second team (2019) all-conference honors the past two seasons. LHP Joe Sheridan from UCF was named a freshman All-American in 2017 by Louisville Slugger and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.
Local product LHP/OF Ryan Lynch from Penn High School (teammates with senior Niko Kavadas), took the Kingsmen to the state championship game during his freshman season in 2017. Lynch was named the Gatorade Indiana Baseball Player of the Year in 2019-20. Another local product is a familiar name to the Notre Dame campus. OF/C Brady Gumpf, son of current softball head coach Deanna Gumpf, led St. Joseph High School to the state championship in 2017. Brady’s dad, John, was a Notre Dame baseball assistant coach for three years and was the head coach at St. Joseph High School in South Bend. The incoming freshman class is filled with talent as a number of them earned All-American honors during their high school careers including Matt Bedford, Drew Byers, Brock Murtha, Gumpf, Lynch and Danny Neri.
