John Kemp Named To NCAA Championship All-Tournament Team

May 29, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame junior goalie John Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) was selected to the all-tournament team for the NCAA Division I Men’s Lacrosse Championship. Kemp made 39 saves in three NCAA tournament contests.

Kemp notched 13 saves in Saturday’s 7-5 semifinal setback to eventual national champion Loyola. He and the Fighting Irish defense held Loyola to its lowest goal output of the season. The Greyhounds did not score for the final 26:40 of the contest.

Kemp made 12 saves in the 13-7 win over Yale in the first round of the NCAA Championship and followed that up with a 14-save performance in the 12-10 quarterfinal triumph of Virginia.

Last week, Kemp received first-team All-America honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA). In addition to the All-America accolade, he was the recipient of the Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top goalie. Kemp was tabbed as the BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year earlier this month.

Kemp finished the 2012 campaign with the nation’s top goals-against average (6.27) and save percentage (.637) along with being 11th in saves per game (11.06). The goals-against average mark ranks second in Fighting Irish history.

Notre Dame concluded the season with a 13-3 record and ranked third in the final Nike/Inside Lacrosse media poll.
