NOTRE DAME, Ind. — The Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Tuesday that junior Cameron Junker and senior Eric Gilgenbach have been named to its All-Academic Team. It is the sixth straight year that at least two Irish baseball players have been named to the ACC All-Academic Team.
Junker had a breakout season in his junior year with the Irish. The right-hander from Cincinnati, Ohio set career highs in a number of categories including IP (77.1), starts (15), wins (3), strikeouts (73) and opposing batting average (.234).
Junker led the Irish starters in ERA and quality starts (8) and he was on the mound for all three shutout wins on the season. He set a career high twice this season with 7.1 IP on the road against No. 12 Clemson and at home against Virginia. Junker set a career high in strikeouts with 10 in the home win over Canisius and he was the third Irish pitcher to eclipse the double-digit strikeout plateau this season (Cameron Brown, Cole Kmet).
After his career season, Junker was drafted in the 10th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2019 MLB Draft. He made his professional debut for the West Virginia Black Bears on June 21 and picked up the save after one inning of work.
Gilgenbach was named a team captain for his senior year and was a Senior CLASS Award candidate. He was second on the team in home runs (9), RBI (40) and slugging percentage (.428) while setting a career high with six steals. Gilgenbach tallied his third career multi-home run game when he hit two against Ball State on March 3.
The Rochester Hills, Mich. native graduated in May with a degree in Finance from the Mendoza College of Business.
