Kavanagh Becomes Fourth Tewaaraton Finalist In Program History

WASHINGTON – University of Notre Dame men’s lacrosse sophomore Pat Kavanagh is one of five finalists for the 2021 Tewaaraton Award, as announced Friday morning by The Tewaaraton Foundation.

Kavanagh becomes the fourth Notre Dame player to be named a finalist for the prestigious award, joining his older brother Matt (2015), defenseman Matt Landis (2016) and attackman Tom Glatzel (2001).

The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States.

The presentation of the 2021 men’s and women’s Tewaaraton recipients will be made during halftime of the 5 p.m Premier Lacrosse League game between Whipsnakes and Chaos on June 5 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network.

The four other finalists are Jared Bernhardt (Maryland), Jake Carraway (Georgetown), Chris Gray (UNC) and Michael Sowers (Duke).

From Rockville Centre, New York, Kavanagh is the youngest player in 2021 to be named a Tewaaraton finalist. The attackman is the first sophomore to receive the honor since Pat Spencer accomplished the feat in his sophomore season in 2017.

Kavanagh has been a revelation in the attack for Notre Dame this season, averaging 5.9 points per game to rank second in the league. The sophomore broke Notre Dame program records for assists in a season (36) and points in a game (10) during the 2021 campaign. The attackman has also become a mainstay on SportsCenter, regularly appearing in its Top 10 countdown for best plays in the country.

The attackman also leads the ACC in assists per game (3.6) and tied the Notre Dame program record for assists in a game with seven in the season-opening win over Rober Morris. The sophomore has posted five or more points in seven of 10 games this season.

Kavanagh and Irish teammate Jack Kielty were among 25 Tewaaraton nominees earlier in the 2021 season.

The Tewaaraton recipients will be chosen at the conclusion of the 2021 college lacrosse season by selection committees comprised of premier college coaches who are appointed annually by the Tewaaraton Foundation.

This year’s initial Tewaaraton Watch Lists were announced March 11. Additions to the Watch Lists were announced on April 2, and the nominees. 25 men’s and 25 women’s nominees were announced April 22.For more information on the Tewaaraton Foundation visit tewaaraton.com.
