Kemp Tabbed As GWLL Player Of The Week For The Second Time This Season

March 29, 2007

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame junior goaltender Joey Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) has been named the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) Player of the Week for March 19-25. Kemp made nine saves and allowed just two goals in the Irish’s 11-3 win over Bellarmine in the GWLL opener on March 20. This is the second such honor for Kemp this season.

Kemp, a preseason honorable mention All-America selection by Inside Lacrosse, played 50:49 in the contest against the Knights to collect the win and improve his career mark to 19-10. Earlier this season, Kemp was selected as the GWLL Player of the Week as he helped Notre Dame to a 9-7 victory over No. 11 Loyola in the season opener.

The junior co-captain boasts solid numbers this season. His goals-against average mark of 7.64 ranks 14th among all NCAA Division I men’s players, while he is 16th nationally with a 0.584 save percentage.

Kemp was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American last season as he ranked eighth nationally in save percentage (.596) and 12th in goals-against average (7.54). As a freshman in 2005, he led all NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse goaltenders with a .652 save percentage en route to being named the GWLL Rookie of the Year. Kemp was named to the all-GWLL first team last season and was a second-team member as a freshman.

This is the third GWLL Player of the Week accolade for the Fighting Irish this season. Senior attackman/midfielder Brian Hubschmann (Short Hills, N.J./Delbarton) received the honor for the week of March 12-18. Notre Dame’s three selections are the most for any league team this season.

The 17th-ranked Fighting Irish (4-3) return to the field this Saturday (March 31) as they face Brown in Providence, R.I. at 12:00 noon (ET).
