ATHENS, Ga. – Notre Dame’s third-ranked duo of Kali Krisik (Arkansas City, Kan.) and Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) battled to a three-set women’s tennis victory Friday over TCU’s 46th-ranked tandem of Kayla Duncan and Katariina Tuchimaa in second-round action of the NCAA Doubles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Center in Athens, Ga., 2-6, 6-1, 6-1.
Krisik and Frilling were able to jump out to the 1-0 lead in the first set after holding serve to begin the match. However, TCU’s duo responded by taking the next three games to move the margin to 3-1. The Irish would hold serve to bring the score back to one game, but it would not be enough as Duncan and Tuchimaa would grab the next three games and close out the first set, 6-2.
Krisik and Frilling rebounded in the second set, taking a 3-0 advantage while holding serve twice and earning a break. Duncan and Tuchimaa would hold their serve to narrow the gap to 3-1, but the Irish team did not allow them any closer, winning the next three games to finish off the second set, 6-1.
In the third and final stanza, both teams came out and held their opening serve to move the match to 1-1. With Duncan and Tuchimaa serving, Krisik and Frilling would earn a break to take the lead in the match and would not look back, capturing the remaining four games and closing out the set, 6-1, to capture the match.
With the win, the Krisik and Frilling advance into the NCAA Doubles Championship quarterfinals Saturday and will face-off against the winner of the matchup between the 8th-ranked team of Nadja Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson of Georgia and 12th-ranked Kristi Boxx and Karen Nijssen of Ole Miss.
