Kumlin Signs Professional Contract In Native Sweden

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Just days after walking the stage as a University of Notre Dame graduate, former Irish hockey defenseman Axel Kumlin has signed his first professional hockey contract and will report to Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League for the 2026-27 season.

“I am extremely excited for the opportunity ahead as I begin my professional hockey career in Ängelholm, Sweden and represent Rögle BK,” the Stockholm native said on the signing Tuesday as he pursues the opportunity in his home country.

A two-year letterwinner with the Irish, Kumlin served as an alternate captain as a senior and registered 17 points off three goals and 14 assists in his final collegiate season. In two seasons at the Notre Dame blueline he amassed nearly two-thirds of his career points, amassing 38 points (9-29-38) in 75 games to close out his collegiate career with 141 games played and 60 points (14-46-60).

“My time at University of Notre Dame helped shape me into who I am today, both on and off the ice,” Kumlin said, reflecting back on his two seasons in South Bend. “I’m genuinely thankful for the memories, but most important, all the amazing people and lifelong friendships.”
