NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame head coach Debby King has announced the hiring of Kyle Veltri as assistant women’s golf coach. Veltri returns to the Notre Dame community as she was a 2001 graduate from Saint Mary’s College. She will help King as she continues to build an already solid Fighting Irish program that has reached the NCAA tournament the past two seasons.
Veltri has seven years of experience in the golf industry, tracing all the way back to her work at the Notre Dame/Saint Mary’s College Nike Golf Camp in 1999 and 2000. At the camp, she introduced golf etiquette, rules and technique to over 50 youths per week. The Clarksburg, West Virginia native also worked at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course as a golf shop assistant during her time at Saint Mary’s.
“I’m really pleased to be back after having already spent four years in the Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s community,” states Veltri, who was a three-year member on the Saint Mary’s golf team. “I’m looking forward to being back here and I’m looking forward to getting experience at Notre Dame because there is no better place to do that than here.”
Following her graduation from Saint Mary’s College, Veltri worked for nearly one year at Captain’s Choice Golf Services Inc. in Orlando, Florida where she served as management/tournament coordinator while also working in sales. She managed the company’s secondary location along with selling both individual and tournament tee times. Additionally, she planned each tournament including the organization of the golf course, merchandise, food, beverage and location.
During the summers of 2003 and 2004, Veltri served as an instructor/counselor at the Stonewall Resort Nike Golf Camp in Roanoke, West Virginia. At the camp, she taught golf etiquette, rules and technique to youths on a daily basis along with supervising campers during day and evening activities.
“This is Kyle’s first coaching job and I’m excited to have her enthusiasm and her willingness to learn,” says King. “Kyle has the personality to deal with the student-athletes on a one-on-one basis. Plus she has been a PGA apprentice and people probably don’t realize the hard work it takes in getting that status. That teaching knowledge will really help the program. It will be fun to have her here.”
For the past three years, she worked at the Palmer Course at the Stonewall Resort as the assistant golf professional. Her main duties included the coordination golf tournaments by consulting outing groups. She also created marketing plans and traveled to golf shows to promote and market the golf course and resort.
“I have a passion for the golf industry and that is why I’ve spent seven years in different areas of the industry,” states Veltri. “It’ll be great to work with Debby (King). Her knowledge and commitment and where she’s been will really help me to gain experience. My passion started here with (former Notre Dame men’s head coach) George Thomas and I learned a lot from him and will continue to learn a lot from Debby.”
