NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A back-and-forth battle waged between No. 22 Notre Dame (6-4-2, 2-2-0) and No. 20 Wake Forest (9-2-1, 3-1-0) Friday evening at Alumni Stadium but a Demon Deacons goal in the 88th minute lifted the visiting team to a 2-1 victory over the Irish.
How It Happened
Notre Dame’s defense looked poised in the early goings, not allowing a Wake Forest shot until the 14th minute when Taylor Klawunder saved a go-ahead goal by being in the right place at the right time with a clearance on the goal-line.
Flash ahead to the 39th minute when the Irish nearly notched the first goal of the contest. Meghan Doyle supplied a through-ball from the right wing into the middle of the box, where a streaking Sandra Yu’s one-time shot missed inches to the right of the post.
The Demon Deacons later seized the momentum right before the half when Maddie Huster got behind the Irish defense on the left side before striking a goal near-post in the 44th minute.
Notre Dame would immediately avenge the goal just minutes into the second half. A Sabrina Flores header off of a cross was saved, but Ginny McGowan was there for the rebound, and a header of her own that found the back of the net. It marked McGowan’s first goal of the season.
Yet, in a match that looked poised to head to overtime took a turn in the 88th minute. Wake Forest’s Sofia Rossi delivered a corner kick in which a deflected Irish clearance fell onto the feet of Vicky Krug, who then tallied the game-winner from 14 yards out on the right-side of the box.
