Notre Dame, Ind. – Luke Boughen (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) scored his third goal of the season 3:36 into the first overtime session to lift the Notre Dame men’s soccer team to a 1-0 BIG EAST Conference victory over 15th-ranked Boston College at the Newton Campus Soccer Field.
Notre Dame’s goal was set up when Justin Detter (White Lake, Mich.) led Boughen with a pass down the left side of the field and he (Boughen) hit a low shot to the far side past Eagle goalkeeper Kyle Singer.
The victory was an important one for the Irish as they recorded their third win over a ranked team this season. The win also kept Notre Dame in position to potentially host a quarterfinal game in the BIG EAST Tournament. With the win, Notre Dame improves to 6-3-3 overall and 3-2-1 in the BIG EAST, while Boston College falls to 7-3-0 and 4-2-0 in league play. The loss was just the second for the Eagles in the last seven games.
Notre Dame outshot Boston College 15-10 in the game and owned a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Both teams had scoring chances in regulation. The Eagles’ best chance eight minutes into the second half when Neil Krause hit leading scorer Casey Schmidt with a touch, and Schmidt beat Irish goalkeeper Greg Tait (Fayetteville, N.Y.), but the goal was disallowed because Schmidt was ruled offsides. Notre Dame’s best scoring chance in regulation came five minutes later when senior Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany), the Irish’s leading scorer, booted a hard shot in front of the net off of a corner kick, but Singer dove to make an acrobatic save.
Tait earned his second straight in goal in place of sophomore Chris Sawyer (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) who was injured on October 4 in the second half of the Pittsburgh game. Tait finished with four saves, while Singer stopped five shots.
Today’s contest ends a stretch of four road games in their last six outings. Notre Dame returns home for a two-game homestand on Wednesday night (Oct. 16) when the Irish play host to Michigan State in a non-conference matchup at 7:00 p.m.
