Maggie Tamasitis Selected As Nominee For Tewaaraton Trophy

April 25, 2012

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse captain Maggie Tamasitis (Boyertown, Pa.) has been named one of 25 nominees for the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy, it was announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation Wednesday.

Tamasitis becomes the sixth Irish player to be named a Tewaaraton Tropy nominee, joining Shaylyn Blaney (’09), Jillian Byers (’08 & `09), Caitlin McKinney (’08), Crysti Foote (’06) and Meredith Simon (’04) on that list.

A 2011 third-team IWLCA All-American and preseason Inside Lacrosse Magazine third-team All-American, Tamasitis has already enjoyed a record-breaking campaign for the Irish. The senior attacker has dished out a school single-season record 50 assists on the year with two regular season contests still remaining.

Additionally, the preseason first-team, all-BIG EAST selection has chipped in 19 goals on the season, leading the team with 69 points. Tamasitis currently ranks tops in program history in career assists (142), while placing fifth in total points (215) and tied for sixth in games played (72).

Tamasitis also finds herself among the top players in the BIG EAST Conference, placing first in both total assists and assists per game (3.57), while ranking second in total points and points per game (4.93). Her marks in assists per game and points per game put her tied for second and alone in eighth in the nation, respectively, in those categories.

The award, which is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate lacrosse players in the nation, will be presented to the winners from both the men’s and women’s nominees May 31 at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. Five finalists from both the men’s and women’s lists will be announced May 10 and invited to the award ceremony.

The women’s award nominees include players from 17 schools, including 2011 winner Shannon Smith (Northwestern) and representatives from 16 of the current top 20 teams in the April 24 IWLCA Division I poll. Tamasitis represents one of five BIG EAST players nominated for the Tewaaraton Trophy along with Syracuse’s Alyssa Murray and Michelle Tumolo, Loyola’s Marlee Paton and Georgetown’s Sophia Thomas.
