Match 4 Preview: #4 Indiana

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame welcomes a ranked opponent to Alumni Stadium for the second time in two weeks with No. 3 Indiana coming town for the latest installment in the intrastate rivalry. The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 6 and will air on ACCN and admission is free.

THE INDIANA SERIES

• Notre Dame and Indiana will face each other on Sunday evening for the 48th time in series history.

• The Irish are 10-31-6 against the Hoosiers in the all-time series.

• Despite trailing in the series, the rivalry has been much more even as of late, as the Irish have recorded a mark of 5-7-5 in the last 17 meetings dating back to the 2010 season.

• Eleven of the last 12 matches have either ended in a draw or a one-goal decision.

• The two sides played an entertaining match last season, battling to a 2-2 draw in Bloomington in the second match of the season.

• Current junior Jack Flanagan scored the opening goal for the Irish in last year’s outing against the Hoosiers.

• In the most recent match between the two sides in South Bend, Notre Dame outlasted Indiana in penalties by a result of 5-4 in the 2023 NCAA Championship quartefinals to advance to the College Cup for the second time in three seasons.

LAST TIME OUT

• The Irish picked up a ranked win, defeating No. 14 Oregon State by a final score of 1-0.

• Senior captain Mitch Ferguson scored the game winner in the 39th minute, heading in a free kick at the back post off the service from KK Baffour.

• Blake Kelly recorded a clean sheet in goal, finishing with seven saves on the evening, six of which came in the second half.

• Following the win, Ferguson was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week while Kelly picked up Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week accolades.

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE

• Through three matches the Irish have allowed just one goal this season, coming on the road in the opener against Michigan.

• Notre Dame has posted back-to-back shutouts against IU Indy and No. 14 Oregon State.

• The Irish haven’t allowed a goal at Alumni Stadium since Boston College scored one on Oct. 19, 2024.

• Notre Dame hasn’t given up a goal in the first half at home in six straight games.

2025 CAPTAINS

• Mitch Ferguson and Wyatt Lewis will serve as the captains for this year’s Fighting Irish team and Blake Kelly will take on the role of assistant captain.

• Ferguson has appeared in 53 games over his Notre Dame career, scoring four goals and adding seven assists from the center back position.

• Lewis enters his third season with the Fighting Irish and has three goals and four assists as a holding midfielder.

• Kelly started 12 matches as a freshman in 2024, posting a record of 4-3-5 while recording 26 saves.

BALANCED ATTACK

• Ten returning Irish players registered at least one point in their Notre Dame career, as the team returns 54 points from last year.

• Nine players that scored a goal during the 2024 campaign are back on this year’s team.

• Junior Jack Flanagan is the top returning goal scorer on the 2025 squad after firing in a career-high four goals during his sophomore campaign.

FRESH FACES

• The Irish welcome six freshman to the 2025 squad, totaling a 27-man roster.

• The six freshman are Karson Baquero (M), Luke Burton (F), Diego Green (M), Cole Kowalski (GK), Alex Rosin (D) and Ren Sylvester (F).

• Also joining the team are grad transfers Diego Ochoa (D) and Martin Von Thun (D). Ochoa joins the Irish from Boston College and Von Thun spent the last four seasons at Holy Cross (Ind.).

THE CHAD RILEY ERA

• McFarland Family Head Men’s Soccer Coach Chad Riley is in his eighth season in charge of the Notre Dame men’s soccer program in 2025.

• Riley became the first head coach in program history to lead the Fighting Irish to two College Cup appearances, coming during the 2021 and 2023 seasons.

• Notre Dame has captured both an ACC regular season and tournament title under his direction, both firsts in program history.
