Maund And Powers Earn Preseason All-America Honors From Soccer America

Aug. 23, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame men’s soccer players Aaron Maund (Sr./D) and Dillon Powers (Jr./M) have earned preseason All-America honors from Soccer America. The duo is among 25 standouts that earned the recognition.

Maund (Dorchester, Mass./The Roxbury Latin School) already has received preseason All-America accolades from College Soccer News in addition to being named to the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. The senior central defender delivered for the Irish during the 2011 exhibition campaign. He netted the equalizer, off a free kick from Powers, against Xavier with just 90 seconds left in the match. The Irish and the Musketeers tied 1-1. Maund also knotted last night’s 2-2 draw with Creighton with a goal in the 84th minute.

During his stellar Fighting Irish career, Maund has started all 59 matches in which he has played. He has seven points on two goals and three assists. Along with earning second-team all-BIG EAST honors last season, he copped third-team all-league accolades as a sophomore. Maund also was named to the All-Great Lakes Region third team in 2009 and 2010.

Powers (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) joined Maund on the 2011 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team. The junior has played in 38 matches, including 24 starts, during his first two seasons with the Irish. He started every contest last season and ranked second on the team in goals (4) and points (12) en route to earning second-team all-conference honors. The midfielder has 17 career points on four goals and nine assists. Powers assisted on Danny O’Leary’s game winner in last week’s 2-1 exhibition victory at Butler.

Maund and Powers, along with fifth-year senior Greg Klazura, will serve as 2011 team captains for the Fighting Irish, who are ranked ninth in the Soccer America preseason poll.

Notre Dame will begin regular-season play Saturday with a home showdown against instate rival Indiana. The Irish and the 15th-ranked Hoosiers will square off at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at Alumni Stadium.
