July 20, 2011

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame’s Andrea McHugh has been named to the 12-player roster for the United States Women’s Junior National Team (WJNT), which will travel to Peru for the 2011 FIVB Women’s Junior World Championship (U-20) held July 22-31.

McHugh, a rising sophomore outside hitter for the Irish volleyball squad, was originally an alternate for the team before being called up for the event.

In preparation for leaving for Peru, the team underwent training from July 10-19 at Saint Mary’s College (Calif.) under the direction of U.S. Women’s Junior National Team head coach Rob Browning. Browning also serves as the head women’s volleyball coach at Saint Mary’s.

“While the competition will be fierce in Peru this summer, we have a group of players and coaches who can win it all,” Browning said. “We want to return with the world championship trophy.”

A native of Yorba Linda, Calif., McHugh was an alternate for the 2010 U.S. squad that captured the gold medal at the NORCEA Women’s Junior (U-20) Continental Championship held in Tijuana, Mexico.

To be eligible for the 2011 U.S. Women’s Junior National Team, athletes needed to be born in either 1992 or 1993.

McHugh made a splash in her first collegiate season, earning BIG EAST Conference and AVCA Northeast Region Freshman of the Year honors in 2010.
