Notre Dame, Ind. — Sophomore Tom Glatzel (Ellicott City Md.) tallied a career-high five goals as four other Notre Dame players finished with multiple-goal games in leading the Irish to a 17-9 victory over Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) foe Denver.
With the win, Notre Dame evens its overall record 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the GWLL. The Irish lost their season opener 13-8 at Penn State last Sunday (February 28).
In addition to his five goals, Glatzel had two assists to lead the Irish in scoring with seven points on the evening. Another sophomore, Todd Ulrich (Baltimore, Md.) also had a big night for the Irish as he finished with two goals, and for the second straight game, registered a career-high three assists. Twin brother David tallied a goal an dished off a game-high four assists.
Seniors Ben Savage (Ellicott City, Md.), Chris Dusseau (Columbus, Ohio) and Brad Owen (Amherst, N.H.) had a pair of goals, while Chad DeBolt (Waterloo, N.Y.), Jon Harvey (Winchester, Mass.) and John Flandina (West Islip, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for the Irish.
Mike Law, who finished the game with four goals for the Pioneers, put Denver up 2-0 less than four minutes into the contest. The Irish tied the contest on successive goals by Todd Ulrich and Owen and took the lead for good on Dusseau’s tally off a Todd Ulrich assist with 8:53 remaining in the first quarter. Notre Dame jumped out to a 5-2 advantage late in that same quarter on back-to-back goals by Glatzel, but Denver cut the advantage to 5-3 at the end of the first on Chad Wittman’s score as time expired.
Notre Dame led 8-5 at the half and then shut the Pioneers out in the third quarter and proceeded to score seven unanswered goals. The Irish defense held Denver scoreless for over 20 minutes of the second half. Denver finally broke the Notre Dame scoring string with Geoff Bieging’s score with 9:32 remaining in the contest that brought the visitors to within 16-6.
Junior Kirk Howell (Nashville, Tenn.), making his second career start, allowed just six goals and came up with seven saves.
The 17 goals scored by the Irish were the most since Notre Dame beat Ohio State 20-7 during the 1997 campaign.
With the loss, Denver falls to 0-3 on the season.
The Irish return to action on Sunday, March 7 when they host another Great Western Lacrosse League foe Air Force at 1:00 p.m.
