PROVIDENCE, R.I.. — Two second-half goals by Providence lifted the Friars to a 3-1 victory over the Notre Dame men’s soccer team. Tom Blesso had a goal and two assists to lead Providence to the win as the Irish suffered their fifth straight BIG EAST setback.
Freshman Kevin Richards (Warwick, Bermuda) scored Notre Dame’s lone goal in the contest. His first collegiate goal came off assists from Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) and Chad Riley (Houston, Texas) as he tied the game at the 33:31 mark of the contest.
Kevin Jones off a feed from Blesso gave the Friars a 1-0 advantage 19:07 into the contest. Derek Cobbe provided the game-winner for Providence off an assist from Blesso in the 58th minute of the contest, before Blesso netted an insurance goal off an assist from Andy Bussmann at the 79:19 mark.
With the loss, Notre Dame falls to to 4-6-1 overall and 1-5-0 in league play, while Providence improves to 3-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in BIG EAST action.
The Irish return to action on Saturday, Oct. 14 when they play host to St. John’s at 7:30 p.m. on Alumni Field.
