The University of Notre Dame men’s soccer team wrapped up its exhibition play for the 2004 season on Saturday evening, battling Massachusetts to a scoreless (0-0) tie in Chicopee, Mass. The game was a solid defensive performance by both teams, with the Irish out-shooting the Minutemen 9-5. Senior Chris Sawyer made two saves in goal for Notre Dame, while Colin Burns and Nick Billman each made two stops for the Minutemen. Notre Dame will enter regular-season action next weekend at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington, Ind. The Irish will face Oregon State on Friday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m., followed by a matchup with Boston University on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 12 noon. Tony Megna led Notre Dame in shots against UMass, putting both his shots on goal. Ben Crouse and Nate Norman also had a single shot on goal while Ian Etherington posted two shots. Notre Dame led in corner kicks 7-5 while the fouls ended up even at 13-13. The Irish were without the services of all-star left back Kevin Goldthwaite, who suffered and injury in practice earlier this week. It is uncertain at the time of this release how playing much time Goldthwaite will miss.
