SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Needing a win or tie to advance to the 1999 BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship, Andrew Aris (Auckland, New Zealand) kicked in the game-tying goal off an assist from freshman Erich Braun (Frankfurt, Germany) as Notre Dame and Seton Hall battled to a 1-1 tie in South Orange, N.J. The Irish will be making their fourth straight appearance in the tournament having won the title in 1996.
Aris scored the goal at the 77:08 mark of the contest following Braun’s shot that rebounded off Pirate goalie Efren Aguirre. For the senior forward, it was his second goal of the season.
The tie gives Notre Dame an overall record of 8-8-3 and 4-5-2 mark in league. Seton Hall, which also earns a spot in the tournament, is now 9-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the league.
With the win, the Irish tie for eighth in the league’s final regular-season standings race with Providence, but earn the eighth seed over the Friars in the tournament by virtue of their 4-0 win during the regular season.
Seton Hall’s Peter Scavo put the Pirates up 1-0 in the contest with his 18-yard shot off a free kick at 59:26. For Scavo, the league’s leading scorer, it was his 15th goal of the season.
The Pirates outshot the Irish 22-13 in the game and had an 11-6 advantage in corner kicks. Notre Dame goalkeeper Gerick Short made five stops in goal.
Notre Dame will play its quarterfinal match at number-one seeded Rutgers on Saturday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Piscataway, N.J. The Scarlet Knights tied shared the regular season crown with Connecticut , but get the top seed based on its win over the Huskies in head-to-head competition.
The semifinals and final of the championship will be held Friday and Sunday, November 12 and 14 at Connecticut in Storrs, Conn.
