SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Notre Dame men’s soccer team snapped its two-game losing streak with an impressive 3-0 shutout of BIG EAST foe Syracuse on the road. With the win the Irish improve to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the BIG EAST.
Freshman Chad Riley (Houston, Tex.) had a goal and an assist to lead the Irish for the first points of his career. Seniors Connor LaRose (Claremont, Calif.) and Dustin Pridmore (Dallas, Texas) scored their first goals of the season to round out the scoring for the Irish.
Sophomore goalkeeper Greg Tait (Fayetteville, N.Y.) registered his third shutout of the season as he made five saves in the contest.
LaRose tallied the first Irish goal in the 16th minute of play when he headed in Riley’s corner kick. The remainder of the half was scoreless as the Irish carried a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Notre Dame’s second goal came at the 69:47 mark of the game when Erich Braun’s (Frankfurt, Germany) shot rebounded off of Syracuse goalkeeper Kevin Bacher and was picked up and put into the net by Pridmore. The assist was the first point of the season for Braun who made his first start of the 2000 campaign. He missed the first three games of the season and played just the final 10 minutes of the previous outing (a 2-0 loss at Boston College last Saturday) because of a hamstring injury.
The final Irish score was put in by Riley off an assist from Matt Rosso (Churchville, Pa.) at the 76:27 mark of the contest.
Notre Dame outshot Syracuse 18-15 in the game, but the Orangemen now 2-3 -0, 1-2 in the BIG EAST, owned an 8-7 advantage in corner kicks.
The shutout was the third in four road outings for the Irish who have given up just two goals on the road this season.
After playing four of its first five games on the road, Notre Dame begins a five-game homestand when the Irish host Cleveland State on Tues., Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
