NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming team fell to 2-3 overall with a 138-99 loss at Michigan State. The Spartans won six of the 11 swimming events and swept the two diving events en route to the win.
The Irish picked up victories in the 1000 freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 200 butterfly and 200 breaststroke. Senior Scott Zumbach (Katonah, N.Y.) was a double-event winner in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:54.53 and the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:53.81. Freshman Jonathan Pierce (Newburg, Ind.) also set a new team season-high en route to a win in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:30.43. Notre Dame sophomore Dan Szilier (Norristown, Pa.) captured first place in the 200 breaststroke in 2:05.75, almost four full seconds faster than Michigan State’s John Bruesch’s time of 2:09.44.
The Irish will travel next weekend to Western Ontario for a 7 p.m. meet on Saturday, January 23.
