The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team (2-2) lost a close dual meet 134.50 – 106.50 to Oakland University in Rochester, Mich., Friday evening.

Notre Dame was able to capture five of the 13 events on the night and featured two repeat-winners. Junior distance freestyle stalwart Jonathan Pierce (Newburg, Ind.) won the 1,650 freestyle in 16:00.45 and the 500 freestyle in 4:40.99. Sophomore diver Andy Maggio (Cincinnati, Ohio) kept the Irish undefeated in dual-meet diving events this season by winning the one- and three-meter competitions with 277.12 and 303.30 points, respectively, versus the Grizzlies.

“We started out well but got crunched in the middle,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh said.

“Our freestyle relays times were the best of the season and we improved as a team. Hats off to Oakland, they same a really fine meet. When you dominate the sprint freestyle events, as they did (Oakland went 1-2-3 in both the 50 and 100 freestyle), you put yourself in really good position to win the meet.”

Senior Dan Szilier (Norristown, Pa.) won the fifth event for the Irish taking first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.02.

The Irish will head to London, Ontario for tomorrow’s (Nov. 4) dual meet with Western Ontario University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m., local time.
