The Notre Dame men’s swimming team lost its first dual meet of the season to new BIG EAST conference member Virginia Tech on Thursday night, 129-114, at the War Memorial Pool in Blacksburg, Va. The Irish won seven of the 13 events of the evening, led by sophomore diver Andy Maggio who placed first in both the three- and 10-meter diving events.
The meet ended up being decided in the final event, the 400 freestyle. Virginia Tech entered the race ahead by two points and was able to take first and second place to secure the meet victory.
Event winners for the Irish included freshmen J.R. Teddy in the 1,000 freestyle (9:44.10) and Matt Obringer in the 200 freestyle (1:43.62), team captain and senior Ryan Verlin in the 200 butterfly (1:52.80), junior Jonathan Pierce in the 500 freestyle (4:39.46) and senior Dan Szilier in the 200 breaststroke (2:08.55).
Notre Dame returns to action tomorrow, Oct. 20, in a dual meet at another BIG EAST member, West Virginia.
