The Notre Dame men’s swimming team took first place in the first event of the year, the Notre Dame Relays, in impressive fashion. Notre Dame won 9 of 11 relays and took first place in both diving competitions as well. Butler took second place, followed by Marquette and Valparaiso.
The 400-yard medley relay team of Brian Skorney (Staten Island, N.Y.), Dan Szilier (Norristown, Pa.), Ryan Verlin (Rye, N.Y.) and Matt Grunewald (Centerville, Ohio) swam a meet record time of 3:33.27 in the second men’s race of the night. The first-place showing by the four seniors set the tone for the rest of the evening. Notre Dame actually touched the wall first in every relay, but was disqualified twice, thus preventing an Irish sweep of the meet.
Next up for the Irish is a dual meet with new BIG EAST member Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va. on Oct. 19.
