The Notre Dame men?s tennis opened the first day of play at the Tribe Indoor Invitational at the College of William & Mary with a 4-1 record in singles and a 4-2 mark in doubles. In the No. 2 singles draw sophomore James Malhame and freshman Brian Farrell each won two matches. Malhame beat Virginia Tech?s Sabre Kaderi 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 and Ian Chaney 6-0, 6-1. Farrell defeated William & Mary?s Charlie Briggs 6-4, 7-6 and Ryan Ariko 4-6, 6-1, 7-6. Trent Miller lost 6-2, 6-3 to William & Mary?s Tim Csontos in his only singles match. Play resumes on Saturday with the beginning of the No. 1 singles competition.
Malhame also won a pair of doubles matches with two partners at No. 3 doubles. He teamed with Matt Daly to beat Mehdy Karbid and Martin Larsson of William & Mary 9-8 (7-5) and then paired with Casey Smith for an 8-5 win over Sam Brown and Davor Dupljak of Virginia Tech. Ryan Sachire and Trent Miller split a pair of doubles matches. The 26th-ranked Irish pair beat Old Dominion?s Alexandre Cancado and Nikola Laca 8-6 at No. 2 doubles before losing to Virginia Tech?s 32nd-ranked Adam Marchetti and Andrew Vu 9-7 at No. 1 doubles. Irish sophomores Javier Taborga and Aaron Talarico lost 8-5 to Old Dominion?s Patrick Bpza and Hieronymous Rodriguez at No. 1 but then came back to defeat Virginia Tech?s ?Gerard Baynham and Grant Semon 8-4 at No. 2.
