Men's And Women's Fencing Each Goes 3-2 At Philadelphia Invite

PHILADELPHIA – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s fencing teams closed out the weekend by competing in the Philadelphia Invitational at the Tse Center on Sunday. The men and women both went 3-2 on the day, with all 10 duals featuring top 15 matchups.
The women’s side avenged their two losses from Saturday, defeating No. 13 St. Johns 16-11 and No. 3 Columbia 15-12. The women also picked up a decisive 20-7 victory over No. 11 Temple. The two defeats on the day came at the hands of  No. 1 Princeton (15-12) and No. 7 Penn (16-11).
The men recorded a trio of top 10 wins on Sunday, defeating No. 3 Princeton 15-12, taking down No. 8 St. John’s 21-6 and posting a 14-13 victory over No. 7 Penn 14-13. The two losses were narrow defeats by the slimmest of margins, as No. 11 Yale edged the Irish 14-13 and No. 2 Columbia pulled out a 14-13 decision.
Ariadna Tucker had a great day, finishing with a record of 12-3 in women’s foil. Tucker went a perfect 3-0 against Princeton and St. John’s and posted a record of 2-1 against Temple, Penn and Columbia.
On the men’s side Valentin Matveev reached double-digit victories in epee, going 10-5. Matveev finished the day strong, posting a mark of 8-1 over the last three duals.
The Irish return home to the Joyce Center to host the DeCicco Duals on January 27 & 28. Admission is free for the event.
