WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Junior Amywren Miller set a school record in the 50 free and finished eighth overall Thursday evening on the first day of the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Miller went 22.30 from the far lane to win her preliminary race before going 22.49 in the finals to earn the first All-American accolade of her career.
Miller, who is making her third NCAA appearance, was seeded 20th coming into the meet. Liv Jenson of California was first overall in the final heat with a 22.04.
“Amywren’s preliminary swim was a huge swim for her,” Irish head coach Brian Barnes said. “To be seeded in the fastest preliminary heat and winning the race from lane one is very impressive. She swam like an All-American today. She has worked hard all year and this has been a long time coming for her. It’s exciting to have another 50 free All-American at Notre Dame.”
Carrie Nixon is the only other Irish All-American in the 50 free (1999, 2000 and 2002).
Houston’s Anastasia Pozdniakova scored 356.20 points to win the 1-meter diving event while setting an NCAA record.
The three-day meet resumes Friday morning with junior Samantha Maxwell taking part in the 100 breast. Live results will be available at UND.com.
