NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Stellar play marked the day for the Irish at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships at the Eck Tennis Pavilion, as Irish student-athletes remain standing in both singles and doubles draws heading into Monday’s semifinals and championships.
Irish senior Quentin Monaghan will represent the Irish in both draws Monday, advancing to the singles semifinals with a quarterfinal win to start the day. Monaghan combined with classmate Alex Lawson in the afternoon to earn a bid to the doubles championship.
The top-seeded Monaghan notched an impressive win in the singles quarterfinal round to move onto Monday’s semifinals. The fifth-ranked senior took a one-set lead over fifth-seed No. 63 Ralf Steinbach of Ohio State, but watched a 4-1 lead in the second set slip away. Down a break in the third set, Monaghan broke back to take control of the match, winning 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
Monaghan will face Ohio State’s Herkko Pollanen in the semifinal matchup. Pollanen defeated junior Eddy Covalschi 7-6(3), 6-1 on Sunday.
In doubles play, second-seeded Monaghan and partner Alex Lawson put together a comeback of their own in the quarterfinal to defeat Michigan’s Gabe Tishman and Kevin Wong in the quarterfinal round. Down 4-2 early in the match, the Irish duo rattled off a series of game wins to take the match, 8-5.
Play switched from pro sets to best-of-three for the semifinal match to cap the afternoon, and the 28th-ranked Irish duo made quick work of Ohio State’s Matt Mendez and Hunter Tubert, 6-4, 6-2. They will face Valparaiso’s fourth-seeded Charlie Ernhardt and Jeffrey Schorsch in the championship match.
Play will conclude Monday with the singles semifinals beginning at 9 a.m. ET, followed by the singles championship. The doubles championship will not begin before noon and will depend on the outcomes of Monaghan’s singles play.
