SAINT PAUL, Minn. — The night before the national championship game, Notre Dame hockey goaltender Cale Morris added more hardware to his trophy case. The sophomore received the Mike Richter Award, which is presented annually to the nation’s top goaltender, while also earning First Team West CCM/AHCA All-American honors.
Morris, who was a Hobey Baker Top 10 Finalist, adds to a list of accolades which includes Big Ten Player of the Year, Big Ten Goaltender of the Year and Big Ten Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
The Larkspur, Colorado, native leads the nation in save percentage at .944, a number reached while playing 21 games against the country’s top 15 scoring offenses and facing more shots than any other goaltender in the country (1,238). His 1.94 goals against average ranks eighth in the country.
Morris is one of just eight goalies in the country to surpass 1,000 saves this season. He was named a Big Ten Star of the Week on eight occasions. Entering the national championship game, Morris’ save percentage would set the program’s single-season record, while his goals against average would be third and his total saves would rank sixth.
He becomes the 14th player to earn 15 total All-America honors at Notre Dame. The last was Anders Bjork a season ago. He is the second Irish goalie to be named an All-American and the first since David Brown in 2006-07.
The sophomore is the first Richter Award winner from Notre Dame, with Cal Petersen finishing as a finalist last season.
Morris and the Irish take on Minnesota Duluth for the national title on Saturday, April 7, at the Xcel Energy Center in Saint Paul. Faceoff is at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN and WatchESPN.
