NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Championship Postponed Until Wednesday

May 21, 2002

PALO ALTO, Calif. – Notre Dame senior Lindsey Green (El Cajon, Calif.) and junior Katie Cunha (Mercer Island, Wash.) will have to wait another day before getting underway in the 2002 NCAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Championship. The tournament’s opening rounds were pushed back until Wednesday after the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship was halted by rain on Monday at the Taube Tennis Center after only 42 minutes of competition.

Nine of the 32 first-round singles matches were underway, while the remaining matches did not begin. The matches that were suspended began at 9:00 a.m. (PDT) this morning with the entire first- and second-round singles docket slated to be completed Tuesday.

Because of the delay in the singles tournament, the NCAA Doubles Championship, which was scheduled to begin on Tuesday, will open Wednesday with the first two rounds of action to be completed on the opening day.

Green and Cunha, ranked 55th in the nation, will take on the second seed, the second-ranked team of Bea Bielik and Janet Bergman of Wake Forest, who topped the Irish team 8-1 in a regular-season match. Times for first- and second-round matches have not been released, but all will be played on Wednesday.
