Notre Dame Notes:
Pitcher Peter Ogilvie’s complete game marks just the second time this season that he went the distance. His first complete game came in a 9-1 victory over Michigan (5/1/01).
With the victory, Notre Dame set a team record for wins in a season with 49. Previously, the 1989 and 1992 squads recorded 48 wins.
Alec Porzel played in his 237th game today moving into sole possession of second on the all-time games played list. Next up: 1. J.J. Brock at 238.
Ten of catcher Paul O’Toole’s 20 career home runs have come during the month of May, including seven in the postseason.
After beginning the game with double plays in the first and second innings, the Irish have grounded into nine double plays during the regional.
Would-be base stealers are 1-for-5 against Irish catcher Paul O’Toole in the regional.
With his two RBIs today, senior SS Alec Porzel brought his career total to 213, just eight short of the Irish RBI record of 221 held by Eric Danapilis.
Second baseman Steve Sollman’s two RBIs on the day tied him for third on the team for the season.
Irish CF Steve Stanley was 0-for-10 against Florida International coming into the regional, but he has gone 3-for-8 with two runs scored in the tournament. Stanley now has 263 career hits, just six short of moving him into a tie for fifth place on the Notre Dame all-time hit list with Mike Amrhein (269).
Florida International Notes:
Today’s defeat marks the first time that Florida International has lost to the Irish. The series record now stands at 4-1, leaving only four all-time opponents with an undefeated record against the Irish.
Shortstop Mickey Torello’s two-base hit in his first at-bat brought his season doubles total to 22, best on the team, and puts him in sole possession of third on FIU’s list of doubles hit in a single season.
FIU turned four double plays in today’s game, a team high.
First baseman Hector Nunez’s 2-for-4 effort improves his regional statistics to 5-for-13 (.385). He was hitting .377 coming into the tournament.
2B Tino Burgos extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his 1-for-3 effort.
Florida International had never entered a regional championship game undefeated in the tournament.
