NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Notre Dame junior goaltender Joey Kemp (Potomac, Md./Georgetown Prep) has been named the Great Western Lacrosse League (GWLL) Player of the Week for Feb. 12-18. Kemp helped the Irish capture a 9-7 season-opening victory over No. 13 Loyola on Saturday (Feb. 17). He made nine saves in the winning effort.
Kemp, a preseason honorable mention All-America selection by Inside Lacrosse, held the Greyhounds scoreless over the final 22:56 of the contest, while the Irish went on a 4-0 run to seal the victory. The win improved his career record to 16-7.
This is Kemp’s first-ever GWLL Player of the Week honor. He was a USILA Honorable Mention All-American last season as he ranked eighth nationally in save percentage (.596) and 12th in goals-against average (7.54). As a freshman in 2005, he led all NCAA Division I men’s lacrosse goaltenders with a .652 save percentage en route to being named the GWLL Rookie of the Year. Kemp was named to the all-GWLL first team last season and was a second-team member as a freshman.
The 11th-ranked Fighting Irish return to the field this Sunday (Feb. 21) as they face Penn State in State College, Pa. at 1:00 p.m. (ET).
