EAST LANSING, Mich. – The 25th-ranked Irish men’s tennis team picked up two wins on the road, defeating Marquette, 7-0 and giving Michigan State its first loss (5-2) of the season at the Michigan State Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing, Mich. Junior Casey Watt (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) picked up two singles wins at the No. 1 position, as well as two doubles wins at the third position.

MARQUETTE:

At first singles, seniors Stephen Havens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) and Tyler Davis (Nashville, Tenn./Father Ryan) downed Jose Manuel Munoz and Johnathan Scherwin, 9-7. Junior Niall Fitzgerald (Wicklow, Ireland/Blackrock College) and sophomore Spencer Talmadge (Hillsborough, Calif./Junipero Serra) were defeated by Jose Carlos Gutierrez Crowley and Dan Mamalat, 8-5 in second doubles.

Greg Andrews (Richland, Mich/Gull Lake) and Watt picked up a win at third doubles, defeating Otavio Perim and Thibault Troude, 8-2. The Irish again won the doubles point for a 1-0 lead.

In singles action, the Irish earned victories at each position. Watt topped Crowley, 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 position, while Havens defeated Mamalat in a three-set match (6-7, 6-0, 6-2) at second singles. Daniel Stahl (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) played No. 3 singles and defeated Munoz, 6-1, 6-3.

Andrews grabbed a win at the No. 4 position against Scherwin, 6-3, 6-3. Senior David Anderson (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and sophomore Blas Moros (Boca Raton, Fla./Pine Crest) both earned wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, respectively. Anderson downed Logon Collins, 6-2, while Moros won a three-set match (7-5, 4-6, 10-3) over Troude.

MICHIGAN STATE:

Havens and Davis fell to Jason Norville and John Stratton, 8-6 at first singles. Fitzgerald and Talmadge downed (8-3) Denis Bogatov and Drew Lied at second doubles. Andrews and Watt picked up a win at third doubles, defeating Austin Brooks and Aaron Pfister in an 8-6 decision at third doubles.

Watt remained at the No. 1 position and defeated Bogatov, 7-5, 6-3, while Havens was downed (6-2, 6-1) by Ron Hulewicz at second singles. Stahl defeated Brooks in a three-set match (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) at third singles.

At the No. 4 position, Andrews defeated Stratton, 7-6, 7-6. Pfister earned a win against Davis at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-3, while Anderson defeated Lied in a three-set match (6-2, 6-7, 6-4).
