ATHENS, Ga. – A day after a thrilling three-set victory advanced them into the Round of 16, University of Notre Dame women’s tennis seniors Kristy Frilling (Sidney, Ohio) and Shannon Mathews (Birmingham, Mich.) dropped a three-set match to UCLA’s Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez Friday at the Dan Magill Tennis Center to see their tournament come to a close.
After dropping the first set to Bruins, 6-3, Frilling and Mathews battled back to claim the second set 6-4 and level the match at a set apiece. Dolehide and Montez, however, would rebound to claim the decisive third set by a score of 6-3 to knock off the Irish duo.
Frilling and Mathews concluded their season with an overall record of 30-10 and ranked eighth nationally according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) polls. As a result of entering the tournament as a No. 5-8 seed, the Irish tandem also garnered All-America honors for the first time as a team.
For Frilling, the All-America citation marks the fifth such honor of her career, earning her a spot as the most decorated All-American in Notre Dame program history after passing Michelle Dasso and her four such honors. Mathews, meanwhile, earned her first such recognition and became the 15th different All-American for the Irish.
