How It Happened
The defenses controlled the first half of play, as the score was deadlocked at 4-4 at the halftime break. The Irish struck first, as Gleason found the back of the net in the first two minutes of play. Marquette responded with two scores to take a 2-1 lead into the second quarter.
Notre Dame leveled the score at 2-2 early in the second off a beautiful shot from distance from Costabile. After a Golden Eagle goal put the visitors back on top at 3-2, Morrison Mirer and Costabile both found the back of the net to give the Irish an advantage at 4-3. However, Marquette scored the last goal of the half to go into the half all tied up at 4-4.
After Marquette scored the opening goal of the third quarter to take a brief lead at 5-4 the Irish completely took over the game on both ends of the field. Notre Dame reeled off eight unanswered goals over the next 25:22 of game action.
The run started immediately after the Marquette goal, as Charlie Leonard won the face-off cleanly and ran through the defense before finishing by firing into the back of the net. Mirer and Costabile then added a goal each before defenseman Jack Kielty scored his first goal of the season and second of his career to give the Irish an 8-5 lead heading into the fourth.
The Irish carried its momentum into the fourth frame, scoring the first four goals of the quarter to put the game away.

“Reaching 300 wins means I am old and have been here a long time. The best thing about something like this is that it is not really about me. It is about all the players and a whole bunch of coaches, two of whom have been with me for a lot of those wins. It is gratifying to be around as many good people as I have in the 30 years I have been here.”

“The second half was terrific. We struggled a little bit in the first half and then we straightened that out and worked our possessions and then the dam burst and it got easier.”
Notre Dame Attacking Player Of The Game
Costabile posted his fifth hat trick of the season and 11th of his career in the winning effort, finishing with four goals, just one shy of matching his career high. The junior has now found the back of the net 26 times this season and has scored at least once in all 10 games. Costabile also scooped up a season-high three ground balls and forced a turnover to complete his performance.

Making just the second start of his career, Zullo flourished in goal for the Irish against Marquette. The junior earned the first victory of his career after making 12 saves while allowing only six shots into the net for a save percentage of .667.

The Irish defense held the Golden Eagles’ attack scoreless for 25:22 during the second half, marking the second longest scoreless drought an opponent has had against Notre Dame this season.
