NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Notre Dame senior outfielder Abby Sweet has been named ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season as a result of her stellar performance at North Carolina.
It is the third weekly conference honor of Sweet’s career, as Sweet was named ACC co-Player of the Week on March 2, 2021, after the Liberty Classic, and on Feb. 25, 2020, after the Mary Nutter Classic. She is the only two-time winner of the Player of the Week honor in the ACC this season, as Duke’s Peyton St. George and North Carolina’s Brittany Pickett, both of whom Sweet and the Irish have faced this season, have both won Pitcher of the Week on multiple occasions.
Sweet turned in a monster weekend at North Carolina, batting .714 and going 10-14 with 4 RBI, two home runs, three doubles, 19 total bases, two stolen bases and a 1.357 SLG %. She was especially dominant in the 13-0 win over the Tar Heels, going 5-5 with two home runs, two doubles and a stolen base. Her two home runs helped the Irish total four home runs in that game.
As Notre Dame’s leadoff hitter, she helped the Irish to an explosive showing in the doubleheader Saturday, with a combined 17-0 score over North Carolina, totaling 28 hits while limiting the Tar Heels to just six on the day.
Reaching base in all four games this weekend, she continues her on-base streak to 32-consecutive games.
The senior captain leads the ACC in batting avg. (.547), total hits (29), hits per game (1.81), doubles (8, 0.5 per game), runs per game (1.06) and on-base percentage (.579). She is among the top players in the country in doubles (ninth), triples (ninth), batting avg. (14th), doubles per game (15th), triples per game (25th) and total bases (25th).
Sweet and the Irish will next take the field in Atlanta, Ga., facing ACC opponent Georgia Tech in a four-game series March 19-21. Broadcast coverage will be available via ACC Network Extra.
