The University of Notre Dame Men’s and Women’s swimming team continued their strong starts to the season with a sweep of in-state foe Purdue Friday night at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The women defeated the Boilermakers 216.5-81.5 and the men came away with a 180-120 victory. The women won 15 of their 16 events while the men were victorious in 12 of the 16 events on Friday.

The men were led by freshman Cason Wilburn and senior Josh Bottelberghe. The pair both led the men with four wins for the meet, including two individual events each. Wilburn broke the pool record in the 100 fly with a time of 47.16, which also was an NCAA B Cut. He also won the 200 free (1:37.21) and was on the winning 200 medley relay (1:27.53) and 400 free relay (2:56.73). Bottelberghe was also on the two winning relay teams and won the 100 breast (54.58) and 200 breast (1:58.97).

Leading the way for the women’s team was junior Coleen Gillilan and freshman Madelyn Christman. The pair both led the women with three wins for the meet, including two individual events each. Gillilan and Christman were both on the winning 200 medley relay team that finished with a time of 1:40.24. Gillilan picked up her other two wins in the 200 IM (2:01.85) and the 100 breast (1:01.95). Christman earned wins in the 100 fly (55.17) and the 100 back (54.08). Kelly Straub swept both diving events for the second straight meet with 328.65 in the 3-meter diving and 308.55 in the 1-meter diving.

Sophomore Kaden Smesko earned two wins and had a runner-up finish against Purdue. He was on the winning 200 medley relay and won the 100 back with a time of 49.07. He finished in second in the 200 back (1:47.60) behind teammate Jack Fitzpatrick (1:47.37). Fellow sophomore Sydney Whiting also won two events, the 50 free (23.78) and 100 free (50.82).
