ATLANTA, Ga. — The Notre Dame swimming and diving teams had their best day of the week with a large group of swimmers qualifying for the finals on day three of the ACC Championships in Atlanta. In total, 12 athletes qualified for the individual finals on Wednesday. After three days, the women remained in seventh place (340), while the men moved up to eighth (212).

The top performance of the night came from the men’s 200 medley relay team of Kaden Smesko, Josh Bottelberghe, Cason Wilburn and Chris Guiliano. The team broke the school record in the event with a time of 1:23.81. They surpassed the previous record set in 2017 and the time is good for an NCAA A Cut.

In the first event of the prelims, the Irish had a number of swimmers qualify for the finals in the 400 IM. For the men, five Irish qualified for the finals including Tyler Christianson, Max Miranda, Sean Faikish, Andrew Winton and Jack Fitzpatrick. Christianson finished with the eighth-fastest time in the prelims (3:48.09) to qualify for the A Final. On the women’s side, Luciana Thomas also had the eighth-fastest time (4:12.86) to qualify for the A Final.

In the finals portion, Christianson came in seventh with a B Cut time of 3:47.10 while Thomas finished eighth, also with a B Cut time of 4:13.16. Faikish came in first in the B final and ninth overall with a 3:46.74, good for seventh-fastest time in program history.

A quartet of Irish swimmers qualified for the 100 butterfly finals in the next prelim event. Coleen Gillilan, Megan Deuel and Maddie Potter all finished in the Top-24 to advance to the evening finals. Gillilan had the fifth-fastest time (51.92) to earn a spot in the A Final. Deuel’s time of 53.06 was a personal-best and seventh-fastest in program history. Cason Wilburn qualified for the finals on the men’s side with a 46.32, the third-fastest time in program history.

Gillian placed sixth in the A Final with a time of 52.13. Deuel came in 20th (53.19) while Potter was not far behind in 22nd (53.59). The trio of women all finished with B Cut times in the finals. Wilburn swam in the B Final of the 100 fly and also finished with a B Cut time of 46.36.

Two more Irish made the finals for the women’s 200 freestyle. Ana Herceg and Sydney Whiting both qualified for the B finals later in the evening. Whiting posted a time of 1:46.95 in the prelims, which ranks ninth all-time at Notre Dame. In the finals, Herceg finished 11th with 1:46.46, which is good for seventh-fastest in program history.

Similar to the men’s relay squad, the women also earned an NCAA A Cut in the 200 Medley Finals. Jessica Geriane, Elizabeth Fry, Coleen Gillilan and Madelyn Christman finished seventh overall with a time of 1:37.53.

On the diving board, Kelly Straub narrowly missed qualifying for her second finals of the championships. She finished ninth in the 3-meter diving with a score of 305.75. Annie Wiese placed 12th with a score of 293.95 and Calie Brady rounded the group out in 21st with a 270.10.

Friday’s action gets underway with the 200 butterfly prelims, followed by 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke and the men’s platform diving. The first event will start at 10 a.m. and will be broadcast on ACCNX.
