SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame fell to Seattle in the 2022 season opener at home at Alumni Stadium on Thursday evening by a final score of 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The visitors created the first chance of the game, firing over the bar in the third minute.
Notre Dame then began to control the match and was on the front foot for most of the opening 45 minutes. The scoring opportunity came in the 32nd minute. In the span of 20 seconds Notre Dame had four shots either saved or go off the post but were unable to find the back of the net.
After the opening 45 minutes of play the match remained scoreless despite the Irish holding an 8-2 advantage in shots.
The Redhawks managed to grab the opening goal just five minutes into the second half after the ref pointed to the spot for a handball in the box. The visitors converted the penalty to take a 1-0 lead.
Seattle doubled its lead in the 65th minute off a header from Declan McGlynn, his second of the night, to make the score 2-0.
Thirteen minutes later the visitors scored their third goal off a corner to increase their lead to 3-0 in the 78th minute.
The Irish managed to get one back in the 81st minute as Eno Nto laid a pass off to Kyle Genenbacher who fired a shot into the top of the net for the first goal of his career.
Notre Dame was unable to get any closer as the game ended 3-1 in favor of Seattle.

On the performance…
“Overall there were probably more positives than negatives but it doesn’t feel that way when you lose a game. Seattle U was very clinical but there were some key moments defensively where we could look at ourselves and do a better job.
Some of the positives were the guys coming back from injury, Bryce Boneau and Matt Radivojsa coming in and contributing was nice to see. Now we have to look at the film, grow and get ready for Michigan State.
On the non-conference schedule…
“It speeds up the growing process and it’s hard too. At the end of the day we want to win important games so you have to play good teams and for me you just grow much more when you play quality opponents.”
NOTRE DAME STAT OF THE MATCH
The Irish outshot the Redhawks 19-10 and had a 10-5 advantage in corners in the match.

- Genenbacher scored his first career goal in the opener.
- Nto dished out the first assist of his Notre Dame career.
- Mo Williams, Wyatt Borso and Bryce Boneau each earned the first start of their Notre Dame careers.
- Freshmen Mitch Ferguson, KK Baffour and Sebastian Green each made their Notre Dame debut on Thursday evening.

The Irish have a quick turnaround as they hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to East Lansing for a non-conference matchup with Michigan State at 7:30 p.m. ET on Monday, Aug. 29. The match will be broadcast on BTN+.
