SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The University of Notre Dame softball team will look to right the ship this weekend as the Irish head to California for a nine-game spring break trip, spanning 10 days and covering three different cities.

The Irish will play in five games in the USD/SDSU Co-Host Tournament this weekend from March 6-8. Notre Dame will play No. 20/23 Grand Canyon twice before taking on tournament hosts San Diego and San Diego State. The Irish close out the tournament with a neutral site game against Princeton on Sunday.

Friday’s 2:30 pm ET/11:30 a.m. PT will be the first ever meeting between Grand Canyon and Notre Dame. The national ranked Antelopes are a perfect 22-0 this season. The Irish will also play Grand Canyon on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT.

Notre Dame will look for its first win against San Diego on Friday at 5:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex. The last time the two faced off was in 2012.

It’s the second-straight season Notre Dame will face San Diego State. Last year, the Irish took down then 23rd-ranked San Diego State 5-4 at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, California. In the win, Micaela Kastor struck out seven while Mickey Winchell and Olivia Levitt both drove in runs. The Irish are 6-5 all-time against the Aztecs.

Sunday will mark the fifth overall matchup between Notre Dame and Princeton. The Irish are 4-0 all-time against the Tigers, all coming in a neutral site matchup. 

Notes:

  • Last weekend at Georgia Tech, Caroline O’Brien and Hayden Kyne both hit their first career home runs. Six different Irish players have hit home runs this season.
  • Since 1994, Notre Dame has 99 wins over opponents ranked in the national top-25, including one earlier this season against No. 21/23 Liberty. The Irish will have two chances this weekend to claim win 100 over nationally ranked opponents.
  • This season, Notre Dame is 4-0 when scoring six or more runs this year.
  • Nearly half of Notre Dame’s roster this year (10 out of 21 players) are from the state of California
