SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0-3) picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium as they defeated the Murray State Racers (0-3-0) in a 3-0 victory.
Freshman Kate Kemmerley had herself a day as she recorded her first collegiate goal and finished the day with a brace in the win. She led all players with a career-best two goals and four points on the day.
Junior Lily Joseph continues to lead the Irish in scoring this year as she put away goal number three of the season in Sunday’s win. Joseph is now a perfect 2-2 on penalty kicks this season.
Senior goalkeeper Jackie Hollomon finished with two saves and recorded her first career shutout in the win.
Notre Dame dominated the offensive battle as they outshot the Racers 30-4 and earned 10 corner kicks. The Irish held possession for a majority of the first half as they held the Racers to just one shot in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Irish had one their best looks of the half in the 26th minute as Joseph forced the Racer turnover for a fast break opportunity, but the shot was just wide to the right of the goal.
Still tied at 0-0, the Irish continued to battle for the first goal of the day and were able to do so from none other than their leading goal scorer this season – Lily Joseph.
Kemmerley earned an Irish penalty kick for the second time this season, where Joseph converted on the penalty kick to give Notre Dame the 1-0 advantage in the 36th minute.
Notre Dame doubled their score in the 70th minute as Kemmerley scored her first goal in an Irish uniform. Charlie Codd sent a beautiful ball up ahead to the freshman as her shifty footwork gave her the left-footed strike for a 2-0 lead for the Irish.
Just 10 minutes later, Kemmerley did it again for her first collegiate brace. With Ellie Hodsden and Kemmerley running on a fast break, the ball was deflected by a Racer player where the ball fell at the feet of Kemmerley. The freshman found the back of the net again to put the Irish up 3-0 in the 80th minute.
In the 89th minute, Joseph was able to get one last shot off for the Irish and while it resulted in a Racer save, Notre Dame would close it out with a 3-0 victory at Alumni Stadium.
