ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0-4) finished with a 1-1 draw in Ann Arbor on Thursday evening against the Michigan Wolverines (0-0-3).
Junior Lily Joseph has now scored in three of Notre Dame’s five matches so far this season as she scored the Irish’s sole goal of the evening.
Junior goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica finished the night tying her career-best with 8 saves.
While the Irish had an early look in the 7th minute from Kate Kemmerley on the Notre Dame throw-in, the Michigan save would keep it at an even 0-0.
Notre Dame’s leading goal scorer this season would put the Irish on the board around the midway point of the first half as Joseph scored her fourth goal of the season in Ann Arbor.
The play unfolded as freshman Reese Canada forced a Wolverine turnover and then looked to attack in transition, passing it through multiple Michigan defenders until it found the feet of Joseph on the left side. Joseph went to work as her shifty footwork pushed her past two defenders to get the shot off and over the goalie, finding the back of the net by the back post to put the Irish up 1-0 in the 24th minute.
After scoring the goal, the Irish would outshoot the Wolverines 2-0 in the remaining 21 minutes of the first half. Notre Dame finished the entire half outshooting Michigan 6-3 with both teams winning two cornerkicks a piece.
The Wolverines would go on to score their first goal of the evening just ten minutes into the second half. Michigan converted on a penalty kick after a Notre Dame red card in the 55th minute to tie it up at 1-1. The Irish would play a woman down the remainder of the match.
Despite Michigan’s 10 shots in the second half, the Irish were able to hold the Wolverines scoreless in the remainder of the match.
In the final minute, the Wolverines were also given a red card, which resulted in a free kick for the Irish just outside the top of the box. With one last opportunity to retake the lead, the shot would land just high of the goal as the Irish would close it out with an 1-1 draw on the road.
